Now that the sun is shining and it’s starting to get a little warmer out in Detroit, it’s hard to remember even a few short days ago when Mariel and I braved the arctic Michigan wind for this shoot. We shot some images in the Purdy-Kresge library on Wayne State’s campus, which has beautiful banks of windows and colorful old reference volumes on the upper floors. The roof is kind of cantilevered out over the building, so you can find good light at any time of day, depending on which side of the building you’re on.
We also checked out the Renaissance Center and the People Mover, which are both really cool locations for portraits in Detroit. The People Mover, for those who aren’t around here, is an elevated train that doesn’t really go anywhere, but the stations all have cool art in them. It’s beyond freezing in the winter, but in the spring and summer, the People Mover packs a lot of colorful locations into a 50-cent ride. There’s also an elevated walkway between the Ren Cen and Millender Center which is super space-age!
Mariel is definitely glam, and the city of Detroit- on the edge of a long, long winter- provided the grit. I really enjoyed playing with texture and color on this set.
But since this wasn’t all fun and games (well, okay, maybe it was), we got a few clean headshot-y headshots, too. Here’s my favorite one of the non-serious variety:
